Bharti (Airtel) also plans IPTV service in India

As a follow-up to my rant on Digital TV in India, its important to note that Airtel has also joined the fray for IPTV. As this article states, they are trialing UTStar's mVision systems, newly rebranded as RollingStream (via prnewswire, lightreading).

Here's the article on Indian Television:
Indiantelevision.com's Digital Edge - Bharti plans IPTV launch, UTStarcom the technology partner

A summary of the Indian telco - tv market:

  • Reliance Infocomm is still trying out Microsoft's IPTV
  • Tata Indicomm / VSNL is unsure of what to do next after evaluating vendors for IPTV, and it is possible they are waiting for Tata Sky to launch
  • BSNL has been toying with the idea of "franchisees" who would invest in IPTV, VoD and other content delivery mechanisms, offer them to BSNL customers and share revenue with BSNL - this has gone nowhere to date
Ultimately, this will be a numbers game - at the current cost of investment for IPTV+MiddleWare+VoD, an operator needs a user-base of at least 100k for 5 to 7 years before breaking even on the investment if they match the rates charged by cable operators today.
